The Highway Police Department says the TNC Highway Patrol is on a hiatus and that the roadways haven’t been fully developed for the upcoming winter.
The department said in a statement Wednesday that the department’s operations are currently being handled by its divisional command, and the department plans to resume normal operations Friday, but that the highways will be shut down.
“The highway patrol has been suspended for the time being and will resume operations on Thursday,” the statement read.
“As we have been told that the highway patrol is being closed for maintenance, we are in the process of taking all necessary measures to ensure that the public safety is maintained as much as possible.”
The Highway patrol said that it will continue to work with state and local law enforcement agencies and other state agencies to determine how the highway will be reopened.
The highway patrol was set to be operational by the end of the week, but is no longer expected to be operating by the time the winter snow melts, which is expected to occur Friday or Saturday.
